When I entered Garry's studio/garage I was taken aback. There were paintings like this one stacked in all the available spaces. He works his pieces on the floor with oil based paints. Their impact hit me immediately and I was moved by their complexity and calmed by their simplicity. I knew Garry as my Aikido teacher and it gave me insight into his work. The fluidity of his work is not unlike the fluidity of his movement. To be calm in the presence of ultimate kaos is one of, if not the ultimate gole of Aikido as a martial art and this is present in his work. His color pallete is exploratory and at times aggressive and I like this. Presenting you with conflict and then gently guiding you through a universe of his own making.

what i like about this piece is its openness. in the sense of not forcing anything onto our consciousness. it allows the mind to be free and to wander. there is a curious duality:
while appearing to be completely random at some level, the work contains a number of patterns and regularities. this facilitates mental formations of organic forms. the color scheme is visually stimulating, but not offensive.
